About this project

This is an infographic about Japanese hot spring – Onsen. It’s a project created for a design class.

Onsen is an important component of Japanese people’s life and is marked as unique tourist attractions. This infographic explained how to take the Onsen baths, what to expect, where are the best Onsens, and fun facts.

Challenge

It requires an organic style

It’s hard to translate some Japanese into English

Solutions

I’m very experienced in digital painting — using tablets and draw in software such as Photoshop and Manga Studio, so instead of hand-painting, in order to save time, I painted the monkey and the onsen in Photoshop. To unify the overall style, I then paint all the other visual elements so that the general colors and textures can be compatible.

I did a lot of research, using Wikipedia and information from Japanese official travel website to avoid wrong interpretation. I also translated some Japanese by myself and I consulted friends who majored in Japanese for accuracy.

The result

The final infographic has the feeling I want. I think it’s fun to read and easy to follow. The monkey figure works out well, too.
