Before 1858, there’s no bridge on the canal river that links the train station to the island. Venetians have to take boats, even if it’s only a 3 minutes sail.

The original Scalzi Bridge was built in 1858 by the Ausburgic Empire, and designed by Alfred Neville. This bridge was built shortly after the opening ceremony of the train station, which was how the bridge gets the nickname “Ponte della Ferrovia”, meaning “The train station bridge”.

The Scalzi bridge was made out of iron and at a low height of 4 meters, and both of these elements were an issue for the city of Venice. A low bridge was a large issue for a city that mainly uses boats for transportation, so this limited the types of boats that could pass through. The fact that the bridge was built of iron posed the issues of maintenance and aesthetic for the locals. It did not take long for the bridge to end up in poor shape due to the high levels of rain and flooding, so by the early 1900’s there was no surprise that a new bridge was needed.
